Italy's Speedster Valentino Rossi
« Reply #93 on: May 15, 2009, 03:35:43 PM »

Valentino Rossi (born February 16, 1979 in Urbino) is an Italian professional motorcycle racer and multiple MotoGP World Champion. He is one of the most successful motorcycle racers of all time, with 8 Grand Prix World Championships to his name. According to Sports Illustrated, Rossi is one of the highest earning sports personalities in the world, having earned an estimated $34 million in 2007.

Following his father, Graziano Rossi, Rossi started racing in Grand Prix in 1996 for Aprilia in the 125cc category and won his first World Championship the following year. From there, he moved up to the 250 cc category, again with Aprilia, and won the World Championship in 1999. He won the 500 cc World Championship with Honda in 2001, the MotoGP World Championships (also with Honda) in 2002 and 2003, and continued his streak of back-to-back championships by winning the 2004 and 2005 titles after leaving Honda to join Yamaha, before regaining the title in 2008.

He is the champion. Number 46 for Gauloises Yamaha, he arrived on the scene in 1996 and by 2001 had conquered the 125, 250 and 500 World Championships, making him the second rider in motorcycling history to lift all three titles.

A jet setter. Although he's an Italian by birth, Rossi lives in London.

Money matters. Rossi's wrists should be insured at $16 million, according to market research recently reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Star quality. He's among those featured in Faster, a documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor that takes audiences into the heart of racing. Rossi is joined by fellow riders Max Biaggi, Garry McCoy and John Hopkins in the film.

Globe trotter. There are 1,770,000 results when you search "Valentino Rossi" on the Google search engine. Mostly unofficial fan sites - based everywhere from Japan to Italy - lead the pack. Really, he's got the whole world in his hands.

Rossi comments on 2011 Ducati rumours
« Reply #97 on: September 09, 2009, 02:57:54 PM »

MotoGP World Champion and Misano winner Valentino Rossi was asked about a potential move to Ducati in 2011 after Sunday’s race, but says he is still to decide on his future.
Speculation in the press linking Italian national hero Valentino Rossi with a move to Italian factory team Ducati resulted in the World Champion inevitably being asked about the subject following yet another victory in Italy, but the MotoGP title holder insists the rumours are just paper talk at present.

The 30 year-old rider took another step closer to what would be a fourth premier class title with his current Fiat Yamaha team and a seventh premier class crown in total on Sunday, and when asked about the 2011 Ducati rumours he replied, “I haven’t decided yet about my future, I will decide in the next year. I have a contract signed already with Yamaha (for 2010). For sure it is a great dream for everybody, to see Valentino with Ducati. We will see, I don’t know.”

Commenting on the superb atmosphere at Misano, which is situated close to his hometown of Tavullia, Rossi enthused, “It is fantastic. This year I really feel like this is my home Grand Prix. Before it always felt more like Mugello was home, but here with all this crowd it is brilliant. It is great for MotoGP to have so many fans and to see everyone with their 46 flags was amazing.”

On whether he had expected a harder battle with his team-mate Jorge Lorenzo during the race he stated, “Jorge is always strong but we saw in the practice that we had a little bit of an advantage, so we were able to go a bit faster than him.”

« Reply #102 on: October 28, 2009, 01:39:03 PM »

• Rossi has now matched Mike Hailwood and Carlo Ubbiali with nine titles in all classes. Only Agostini with 15 has more.

• Rossi's win in Assen this season made him only the second rider in history to take 100 wins in all classes. Rossi now has 103, 19 less than Agostini's all-time record of 122.

• He already held the all-time premier class victories record, having beaten Agostini's tally at Indianapolis in 2008. He now a premier-class win tally of 77.

• Rossi's win this season in Brno saw him take the all-time podium record with his 160th podium in all classes. He is also the only rider to have stood on the podium in the premier-class more than 100 times. Latest podium was his 163rd in all classes.

• With 44 wins from 102 races since he joined the Japanese factory in 2004, Rossi is the most successful Yamaha rider of all time. He has 21 more wins than Kenny Roberts, Yamaha's next most successful rider.

• This Latest title means he has now won more titles for Yamaha than for any of the other manufacturers he has ridden for in his career.

• His win at Misano, Italy this year was his 11th win in all classes on home soil.

• He is the only rider in history to have won at least one GP in 14 successive seasons.

Other facts about Rossi's career

• In 1997 Rossi became the second youngest ever 125cc World Champion after scoring 321 points and eleven wins.

• Two years later, he became the youngest ever 250cc World Champion with nine wins.

• In 2001 Rossi joined Phil Read as one of only two riders ever to win the 125cc, 250cc and 500cc titles.

• Rossi's debut victory for Yamaha at the opening race of 2004 in South Africa made him the first rider in history to take back-to-back wins for different manufacturers.

• After winning the MotoGP World Championship three times with Honda, Rossi took his fourth premier-class title with Yamaha in 2004 and became the only rider other than Eddie Lawson to win consecutive premier-class titles for different manufacturers.

• Rossi remains the only rider to win the premier-class title on four different types of motorcycle: 500cc 4-cylinder two-stroke, 990cc 5-cylinder four-stroke, Yamaha 990cc 4-cylinder four-stroke and a Yamaha 800cc 4-cylinder four-stroke.

• Rossi has never missed a GP since his 125cc debut in 1996. He has started 226 successive races in all classes, 166 of which have been in the premier class. Both of these are records.
