Loris Capirossi took his first victory of the season in a dramatic Grand Prix of Japan at Motegi this afternoon as Valentino Rossi crashed out and missed his first opportunity to clinch the 2005 MotoGP World Championship. Capirossi made a cautious start from pole position, chasing early leader Marco Melandri over the opening laps before being joined by Max Biaggi. Rossi, meanwhile, made excellent progress from eleventh on the grid and by the time he caught the leading trio on the fourth lap, Melandri had been relegated to third place.

With Biaggi now leading from Capirossi the pair were left alone at the front on lap thirteen, Rossi colliding with Melandri into turn ten and sending both riders tumbling into the gravel. Capirossi then stalked his compatriot for the next six laps before making his move and opening up an advantage of 1.4 seconds to take a clear victory, Ducati’s first of the season and the first for tyre manufacturers Bridgestone since winning at the same circuit last year with Makoto Tamada. The Japanese rider crossed the line in a distant third place to complete the podium today.

“It is good to have taken the win today but the team have done a great job all weekend,” said Capirossi, who recently signed a new one-year contract with the Italian factory. “Bridgestone have given us some brilliant tyres here and my consistency was good over a lot of laps in practice. I had a good rhythm in the race but sometimes when I tried to pass I was over the limit. When I took the lead I knew I was faster than Max and I knew it would be my race.”

Carlos Checa took the chequered flag in fourth place although he was 22 seconds down on his victorious team-mate as only eleven riders finished a crash-strewn race. John Hopkins, who started from the front row of the grid but gradually lost positions as the race wore on, picked up his best ever Grand Prix finish in fifth ahead of Colin Edwards, Nicky Hayden, Kenny Roberts, Toni Elías, Ruben Xaus and Franco Battaini. Alex Hofmann crashed and broke his ankle, almost certainly ruling him out for the rest of the season.

With Alex Barros and Sete Gibernau also crashing out, the only rider with a mathematical chance of halting Rossi’s championship charge over the next five races is Biaggi, who must score 14 points more than his compatriot to prevent him winning the title in the next race at Sepang in seven days’ time. There was a complaint against Rossi regarding the incident with Melandri, which was rejected by Race Direction, meaning a top four finish will be sufficient for the Italian in Malaysia.

1. Rossi                                261
2. Biaggi                               129
3. Melandri                            126
4. Edwards                           123
5. Gibernau                           115
6. Barros                               114
7. Hayden                             112
8. Capirossi                            92
9. Nakano                              69
10. Checa                              59

this Time Gibernau was screwed up by Luck of Rossi

The oppurtunities were alot
Rossi Was Injured and his one hand was in pain and the next best thing is that he was in the 15 th place during race. while Sete was in 1st and it was his home circuit and there were Kuivert to Jordan to Cheer up (i think but may be not they were there to cheer ......... Wink )
Sete got to carry the mechanical probs and i'm surprised by Biaggi's performance. How can he let Rossi in 3rd place so easily.

ROSSI UNDECIDED ON F1 SWITCH
« Reply #11 on: December 27, 2005, 05:04:38 PM »

Moto GP superstar Valentino Rossi claims he has not yet made the decision to switch to Formula 1 in 2007, despite his extensive test with Ferrari at Mugello last week.

The seven-times world motorcycle champion told Motor Cycle News that he is still not ready to decide on his future beyond defending his Moto GP crown with Yamaha next season.

"I've never said I've decided to go to F1, and I still can't say that," said Rossi.

Rumours persist however that he is being groomed to race for Ferrari after next year, perhaps as a team-mate to Kimi Raikkonen or even motorsport's other seven-time champ Michael Schumacher.

According to MCN, Rossi has been given six months to make his decision.
"The problem is that I am still a motorcycle rider in my mind," added Rossi.

Ferrari has already made public its desire to run Rossi in regular tests during 2006, and this commitment would suggest it is serious about signing the bike ace in the future.

YAMAHA: Moto GP: Rain cuts short second day of testing in Sepang

/noticias.info/ Camel Yamaha Team riders Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards both made progress on the development of the 2006-spec YZR-M1 in Malaysia today, despite the day being cut short by rain. The morning saw high temperatures and building humidity at the Sepang track before it gave way to a rainstorm in the mid-afternoon. Both riders decided not to carry on testing and now hope for good weather tomorrow in order to make the most of the final day.

Ducati riders Sete Gibernau and Loris Capirossi both set fast times under the 2’02 marker today, but Edwards was close behind with a best lap of 2’02.00 after 58 laps. Rossi, who set a lap of 2’02.14 yesterday, was ninth fastest today with a best time of 2’02.62 after 41 laps.

Colin Edwards (2’02.00, 58 Laps)
Today went really well and I’m excited about the progress we’re making already. Usually with a new bike you have to compromise in some areas to improve others, but it seems that with this bike they’ve improved it all over. Yamaha has done a really great job on it over the winter. The traction especially is much better. The crash yesterday has actually helped us to make progress and now we’ve found a setting that I really like. We’ve still got a tiny bit of chatter, but only in about three corners so we’re not so worried and I am confident we can find a way to fix it.”

Valentino Rossi (2’02.62, 41 Laps)
“Today was not perfect because the rain interrupted everything this afternoon and we didn’t do as much work as we wanted to. Up to then we had concentrated mostly on fixing the chatter that we experienced yesterday and in the end we were successful. We realised that the problem was in the rear shock and now it’s okay. I ran a lot on old tyres today and then it started to rain so we weren’t able to try any of the new race tyres Michelin had brought. Tomorrow we will probably do a long run and hopefully we will also get the chance to try some of these new tyres.”

Davinde Brivio – Camel Yamaha Team Director
“Unfortunately it rained this afternoon so we couldn’t finish the day’s work. Despite this both riders made some progress and Colin’s times especially were quite fast. Tomorrow we hope that we have good weather and that we can complete everything that we need to do.”

Rossi to face F1 regulars at Valencia
News, 30/01/06

MotoGP star Valentino Rossi will be one of the main attractions of the upcoming F1 test to be held this week at the Valencia circuit, in Spain.
On Tuesday, the Italian will join the F1 Scuderia Ferrari for a three-day test at the Spanish circuit, sharing the garage of the seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher and his team-mate Felipe Massa. Rossi has previously tested for the prestigious Italian carmaker at the Fiorano and Mugello circuits, in Italy, but it will be the first time that he will take part in a multi-team test.
Eight F1 teams will attend this pre-season test, organized just five weeks before the beginning of the season.
After this new foray in F1, Valentino Rossi will head to Qatar where he will resume his preparation for the 2006 MotoGP World Championship with the Camel Yamaha team

Poor weather hampers Rossi’s F1 test
News, 31/01/06

The highly-anticipated encounter between MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi and the top F1 drivers at the Valencia circuit in Spain was reduced to little more than a taster, as the poor weather hampered the Italian testing schedule with the Scuderia Ferrari.
Rossi could not even complete a single sighting lap at the end of the day as intermittent rain and low temperatures meant that the track conditions were too unstable to do any significant testing. Rossi left the pits by 16.30 and had just completed half a lap when he spun out of the track.
Rossi will have another two days of testing with Ferrari alongside German superstar Michael Schumacher, before having to pack for Qatar where the Camel Yamaha team will be continue pre-season testing next week.

Rossi continues Ferrari testing in Valencia with fast lap
News, 01/02/06

After his disappointing slide off the track on Tuesday, Valentino Rossi today completed 52 laps without problems. The Italian spun three times, twice at the scene of the previous day´s slide and one the final incident of the day at the “Angel Nieto” bend which closed the session.
His best time, ninth overall, behind the wheel of the Ferrari F2004 with its V10 motor was 1´12.856, a second and a half off World Champion Fernando Alonso´s time and less than a second off Schumacher. Rossi, who has been steadily improving his times, will have tomorrow´s final day to improve further before heading to Qatar to continue MotoGP testing on his Camel Yamaha.
