Valentino Rossi took victory in the Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix after a heart-stopping final few laps at the Sepang circuit saw him and compatriot Loris Capirossi switch positions numerous times before the reigning World Champion eventually ran out the winner.

The race began with a surprise in the form of Dani Pedrosa, who had been rumoured to be a possible non-starter for the event with five stitches in the gash on his right knee. However the Spaniard gritted his teeth to take up his fifth place on the grid, and got straight into the race as he blasted into the first corner in first position.

Pedrosa was closely followed by Capirossi and Rossi however, and soon the Italian duo had made their way past the rookie. As Pedrosa braved the pain to hang on behind the leaders, behind him his team-mate and championship leader Nicky Hayden struggled to stick with the front three. At the front Rossi and Capirossi both made attempts to escape, but the pace of the pair was almost identical and there was nothing to choose as the race came down to its denouement.

The Ducati led the Yamaha as the dogfight entered the final lap, and a six-tenths cushion as he crossed the line bode well for Capirossi. Rossi had other ideas meanwhile, and put in a storming last lap to pass Capirossi in the tight uphill left-hander before pulling out another eight tenths to take the win.

Capirossi brought his Ducati home in second, with Pedrosa just a further three seconds behind in third. Nicky Hayden held off mid-race challenges from Sete Gibernau and Casey Stoner to take 13 points in fourth, whilst Gibernau himself was fifth on his return from injury. In the final laps Stoner was overtaken by both John Hopkins and Kenny Roberts Jr. to finish eighth, whilst Marco Melandri and Colin Edwards rounded out the top ten.

Why Dani Pedrosa couldn't come up to progress from his 3rd place...........???
« Reply #31 on: September 10, 2006, 08:50:53 PM »

Repsol Honda riders Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden finished in third and fourth places in today's Malaysian Grand Prix and remain in a strong position at the head of the riders' world championship. Pedrosa defied the pain of injuries sustained in a crash yesterday to take a heroic third, with Hayden just 1.9s behind.

It had been in doubt whether Pedrosa would take part at all after he struggled in the morning's 20-minute warm-up session. But the 20-year-old Spanish rookie displayed typical determination and actually led into the first corner from his fifth-place grid spot. Despite feeling pain from his left foot, he matched the pace of the leaders for most of the race, finishing just 3.8s behind eventual winner Valentino Rossi. This was Pedrosa's seventh podium of the season and his third in successive races.

"The result is very good. The big decision today was whether or not I would race, and until the last moment I was still in doubt about it. We chose to race and they gave me one injection to take away the pain," said Dani Pedrosa. "Although I felt the stitches pressing under my leathers, the pain on my knee was gone. In the race my left foot hurt, and so did my left knee but in the right knee I felt no pain. I got a good start but I was expecting the leaders to pull away and I also expected the lap times to be a little faster than they were. At the end I was very tired - my bike had just the basic set-up because I lost time in practice so I was riding on the limit in the race. In the end I got the result - that's the important thing."
"Also I was lucky that the qualifying practice was cancelled - to start from fifth on the grid was really, really important for me today. I have to say thank you to all the guys in the Clinica Mobile because they worked very hard for me and made me believe I could race," he added. "They took so much care of me - it was a very special job. Also to my team because they encouraged me and helped me to race. Thank you to everybody and I will not forget this day."

Makoto Tanaka, Repsol Honda team manager, commented: "Dani waited to make the decision whether or not to race until the last minute. It was his decision, he had confidence in himself and he gave us an amazing result given his physical condition. Just after the race I said, “That was a surprise!” to Alberto Puig, Dani's manager, but he said, “Not a surprise - it was fantastic!” He's right, Dani showed his real fighting spirit and his result could be important for the last four races."

The washout causing the cancellation of the Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying session of yesterday made space today to the typical sunshine of this country with temperatures reaching 50°C on the ground.

In the twenty minutes' warm up of this morning, the Konica Minolta Honda Team together with Tamada, finished the tests to decide the best tyre to be used for the race without succeeding in make the rider recover the good feeling demonstrated before the fall occurred on Saturday morning.

Started from thirteenth on the grid, Makoto Tamada remained with the second group of riders the entire race having no possibility to approach the leading group. The Japanese rider finished fourteenth with a total race time of 43'56.606.

Gianluca Montiron - Konica Minolta Honda General Director: "After just some laps, we realized that today it would have been a particularly suffered race because our lap times have never been competitive. The rider complained a lack of grip since the beginning. I can state that, here in Sepang, we have never turned with such high lap times as today since when we made here the winter tests Anyway, we keep working at the top to permit Makoto to reach the positive turning point since the next race."

Makoto Tamada: "Right from the start, I had a lack of grip conditioning my performance. This is not a very good moment. The change of the track conditions during the week end cause a great modification of my feeling with the bike.
"

Giulio Bernardelle - Konica Minolta Honda Technical Director: "We can not be satisfied of the race result especially considering that on Friday Tamada demonstrated to be competitive. I think that the fall occurred on Saturday morning, caused by a front rear lack of grip, was negatively determining. This morning, after the warm up, we discussed with Michelin and preferred to choose a rear tyre with better edge grip performance in corners. After having heard our rider's comment, evidently, even this choice was not sufficient."

MotoGP: Edwards and Rossi continue to shine In Qatar
« Reply #36 on: February 17, 2007, 12:19:49 PM »

Colin Edwards maintained his exemplary pre-season form by topping the unofficial time-sheets once again at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar today, with team-mate Valentino Rossi hot on his heels. The Yamaha pairing continue to forge ahead with the development of their 800cc Yamahas and their hard work is reaping rewards, with both riders feeling confident about the impending season.

Edwards best lap of the day, an outstanding time of 1'56.296 set in the morning session, was over a second under the current 990cc lap record. Meanwhile Rossi bettered his time from yesterday with a lap of 1.56.537, despite running into a few set-up problems which he will look to iron-out tomorrow. Both riders will now aim to complete a long-run on the last day before they fly back to Europe for the final 'dress-rehearsal' in Jerez ahead of the first race.

MotoGP: Edwards and Rossi continue to shine In Qatar

Colin Edwards maintained his exemplary pre-season form by topping the unofficial time-sheets once again at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar today, with team-mate Valentino Rossi hot on his heels. The Yamaha pairing continue to forge ahead with the development of their 800cc Yamahas and their hard work is reaping rewards, with both riders feeling confident about the impending season.

Both riders will now aim to complete a long-run on the last day before they fly back to Europe for the final 'dress-rehearsal' in Jerez ahead of the first race.

Colin Edwards - Position: 1st, Time: 1'56.296, Laps: 56

"Today was impressive! We got our second-choice front tyre from Michelin and it was instantly better than the third-choice one we had yesterday, it gave me a lot more confidence in the front-end. We made some big changes to the setting last night and we're now in a different realm, close to what Valentino was running yesterday. It's basically just something that works well on a flat track with no bumps and it felt really good. We made a small change to the rear shock and then we were just testing tyres for the rest of the day. We tested a series of right-side rubbers and then a series of left-side rubbers, searching for the best combination for the race. The times are great but they're coming quite easily, I really haven't pushed out of my comfort zone at all yet. This afternoon was slower because of the wind but at the end of the day, with the last rear tyre, I got my head down for a couple of laps and we still did a 56.4! We'll do a long run tomorrow and see how it all works out then; hopefully we can stay on top and make it a clean sheet for the test!"

Valentino Rossi - Position: 2nd, Time: 1'56.537, Laps: 62

"So, another fast day for Yamaha and I am happy that we're one and two again. Actually, today we ran into a few problems which we need to work on, but anyway this is expected when you're getting faster and faster and it's much better that we find the problems now than in the race! Again we need to work to improve the stability of the bike under braking and this is a very delicate thing because we don't want to sacrifice the agility of our bike. We need to find the right balance. We tried some more tyres for Michelin and today we didn't find anything so great in this area, but we made some decisions about what to try for our long run tomorrow. We're fast and we know we're at a good level, but we can't afford to relax because our rivals are getting closer and I think it's going to be a very great battle this season. Tomorrow we'll try to fix the problems we found today, we have some ideas and I am sure we can have a good last day."

MotoGP: Positive End to Qatar Tests for Ducati
« Reply #38 on: February 17, 2007, 12:29:46 PM »

The final day of testing in Qatar for the Ducati Marlboro Team concluded positively with both riders satisfied with their race simulation today. As in Sepang and Phillip Island, Loris Capirossi and Casey Stoner found a good compromise for the bike and tyre set-up in race configuration which enabled them to lap at an excellent pace. Despite today's progress, the team still has to find the best solution for the qualifying set-up.

Stoner is becoming more and more familiar with his Desmosedici GP7 machine even though today the Australian did not complete many laps because he first had a gearbox problem and then, like several other members of the team, felt sick and opted to wrap up testing early.

The team now returns to Italy and will almost immediately head off again next week for the official IRTA MotoGP tests at Jerez in Spain from 23-25 February. On the Sunday, as per tradition, the one-hour timed practice session will be broadcast live on television at 14.05 CET.

Loris Capirossi (62 laps, best time: 1m56.807s)

"I am quite pleased with the way things went today in race configuration. I did a complete 22-lap race simulation at a good pace. The tyres remained pretty constant throughout and we look to be in pretty good shape in comparison with the others: the bike has improved and so have the tyres. There's still a lot of work to do with qualifying tyres however. For the moment we are unable to get the best out of them. We have to work a lot with Bridgestone to avoid starting too far down the grid and risk jeopardizing the race. If we analyse everything today, we are quite happy with the situation. We still have to improve the set-up of the bike when there is not much grip, like yesterday, but we are OK if track conditions are good. We went well at Sepang, Phillip Island and here. Next week Jerez will be an important session to bring these winter tests to a conclusion"

Casey Stoner (36 laps, best time: 1m56.834s)

"It was another positive day. I was unable to finish the race simulation I was doing because they put the red flags out after 14 laps after someone crashed, but I was going well until then. We tried several different tyres which were satisfactory, so was happy with that. Today I didn't do many laps because I didn't feel well, like several other guys in the team, and I decided to call it a day before the end of the session and not test the qualifying tyres. In the last three days, and since the start of the 2007 tests in Sepang, we have gradually improved and the feeling with the Ducati is getting better all the time. It will be interesting to go back to Jerez next week. For the first time we will test at a circuit where we have already been and this will help to check on the progress we have made so far "

what a impressive performance by ducati.. (CASEY STONER, 21 YRS OLD)..again this time ROSSI couldn't do anything with the power of ducati at the very first race of  MOTO GP 2007 QATAR...
V ROSSI 's  YAMAHA  was always left far behind  in the straight, even though he was very good at the corner n was able to overtake  few times ....Power of DUCATI  and talent of youth , former 250 cc rider  CASEY STONER...  won the first race of 2007 MOTO GP  of QATAR....
